I think this is mainly due to my wide angle and close distance - closer than it may look like. 17 mm (@1,6-Crop) ... so the sun is already blown out a bit and looks much bigger than usual in such wide angle. This may make you believe in a longer lense. Such a longer lense instead would probably have "washed out" more (area around sun more narrow) and would also have less vignetting/spot effect. Oh, and RAW gives a lot dynamic too.

Well, at the end you'll have to test different exposures with such backlight and/or have to hope that it'll come out well ... ;) I mostly like a small aperture to get these stars in the highlights (sun) and a rather short shutter speed in these cases.
